Tourism: Scope and Significance
Definition
Tourism is temporary and short-term
movement of people to destination outside the places Where they
normally work and live and their activities during the stay at each destination
Tourism include business travel,
pilgrimage, family gathering and visit to health center or
natural places (eco-tourism).
Tourism comprises three major aspects
viz. Leisure, Pleasure and Recreation.
Leisure- Use
of free time for enjoyment.
Pleasure- a
feelings of happiness/ satisfaction /enjoyment
Recreation-
Activity done for enjoyment away from routine Work
Therefore, tourism can be defined as ‘travel
for leisure, pleasure, recreation or business purposes'.
Definition of Tourism
Tourism is the act of traveling to and
staying in places outside one's usual environment for leisure, business, or
other purposes for a limited period. It encompasses various activities,
including sightseeing, adventure, cultural exploration, medical visits and
business trips. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines
tourism as "a social, cultural and economic phenomenon that involves the
movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for
personal or business purposes."
Scope
of Tourism
It is vast. It
includes different sectors viz. transportation, telecommunication,
financial and educational sector at large scale as well as human resources, research
and development etc.
With increasing
demand for international and national tourism, there is a need to discover or
invent new destinations and ideas of tourism. In short it is said that the
scope of tourism is unlimited as every small activity which satisfy tourism is
important
Tourism
is a vast industry with multiple dimensions that contribute to economic growth,
cultural exchange and global connectivity. The major areas within the scope of
tourism include:

Leisure Tourism: Traveling for relaxation, entertainment and
enjoyment (e.g., beach holidays, cruises).

mountaineering, rafting, and paragliding.
Cultural Tourism: Exploring historical sites, museums, art, music and
local traditions.
Eco-Tourism: Traveling to natural environments with minimal impact on
the ecosystem.

wellness therapies.
Religious Tourism: Visiting sacred places like temples, churches,
mosques or pilgrimage sites.
Transportation: Airlines, railways, cruise ships, car rentals and public transport.
Tour Operators and Travel Agencies: Organizing and managing travel plans.
Food and Beverage: Restaurants, cafes, bars and street food.

Importance of Tourism (Role of Tourism in National Economy)
Tourism is an important source of income for regions (areas) and countries. In Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 as ‘Tourism is an activity essential to the life of nation because it directly effects on the social, economic, cultural and educational sectors of national societies and on their international relations’
Tourism brings large amount of income to the local economy in the form of payment for goods and services needed by tourists. It also creates opportunities for employment in the service providing sectors of the economy associated with tourism. The service industries which benefit from the tourism include transportation, accommodation, hotel, resort, entertainment facilities viz theatres, parks, music clubs, dance clubs, shopping malls.
