Availability of Water Resources on Earth

Availability of Water Resources on Earth

About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water and 29% of Earth’s surface is land. Water is one of the most important natural resources essential for the survival of all living beings. However, the total water available on Earth is not evenly distributed nor fully usable.

Total Water on Earth: About 97% is salt water found in oceans and seas. Only 3% is freshwater. Out of this, about 2.5% is locked in glaciers, ice caps and underground. Less than 0.5% is available as surface water (rivers, lakes, ponds). Easily accessible groundwater is also used.

This shows that though Earth is called the "Blue Planet," the water available for direct human use is very limited.

Flowchart of Total Water (100%) Distribution on Earth

 ├── Salt Water - 97% → Oceans & Seas

 └── Fresh Water - 3%

├── Glaciers & Ice Caps - 68.7%-- Polar Region, Tundra region, ice covered Himalayas

├── Groundwater - 30.1%-- Borewell, Tube well, Hot water kundas, Spring

└── Surface Water (lakes, rivers, etc.) - 0.3% -- Rivers, Lakes, Atmospheric water vapour

Even though water seems abundant, only a tiny fraction is available for drinking, agriculture, and industry. Therefore, conservation and sustainable management of water resources are crucial.

Applications (Uses) of Water

Water is essential for life and has a wide range of uses:

  1. Domestic Use: Drinking, Cooking, Cleaning, Washing, Bathing

  2. Agricultural Use: Irrigation of crops, Livestock rearing

  3. Industrial Use: Cooling in power plants, Processing in industries (textiles, paper, food, chemicals), Cleaning, Hydropower generation

  4. Environmental Use: Maintaining aquatic ecosystems, Groundwater recharge, Forest and Wildlife support

  5. Recreational and Cultural Use: Tourism (boating, fishing, swimming), Religious and Cultural rituals

Types of Water on Earth

Water on Earth can be broadly divided into two categories: salty water and fresh water. These are further classified based on their source, location, and usability.

1. Salty Water (97% of total water)

Found mainly in oceans and seas. Contains salts and minerals, making it unfit for direct human consumption. Plays a vital role in regulating global climate, supporting marine ecosystems, enabling trade, transport and fisheries

2. Fresh Water (3% of total water)

Fresh water is limited but essential for human, plant and animal survival. It can be further divided as:

(a) Glaciers and Ice Caps (approx.68.7% of freshwater) Found in polar regions (Antarctica, Greenland) and high mountains. Stores the largest share of fresh water, but inaccessible for daily use.

(b) Groundwater (approx. 30.1% of freshwater) Stored under the Earth’s surface in aquifers.  Used for drinking water, irrigation and industry. Over-extraction may cause water table depletion.

(c) Surface Water (approx. 0.3% of freshwater) Found in rivers, lakes, ponds and wetlands. Most easily accessible source for human consumption, agriculture and industries.

(d) Atmospheric Water (tiny fraction) Exists as water vapor, clouds and precipitation. Plays a crucial role in the water cycle and weather patterns.

3. Brackish Water A mix of salt water and fresh water. Found in estuaries, deltas and creek, mangroves. Supports unique ecosystems (e.g., Sundarbans mangrove forest).
